Good Reads on Leadership

We find ourselves in a very unusual time. Our lives have been disrupted and we face daily uncertainties. At times like these we realize afresh the importance of leadership and perhaps we have a bit of extra time to read good books! J. Oswald Sanders said that “discipline in early life, which is prepared to make sacrifices in order to gain adequate preparation for the life-task, paves the way for high achievement.” I encourage you to utilize the time to expand your knowledge base about leadership. Here are four books that deal with leading yourself and leading others that I found compelling and helpful.

  • The Conviction to Lead. Al Molher writes with a soft heart and a steel backbone. He has ridden the turbulent seas of controversy; and he not only lived to write about it but took the helm of the ship during the turbulence and steered her though the storm to calm(er) waters. This is a great book for leaders (and really anyone who desires to make a difference in the world).
  • What’s Best Next. Matt Perman loves getting things done for God’s glory and encouraging others to do the same. I absolutely love how he defines and describes working for God’s glory and the advancement of His kingdom. “Gospel-driven productivity” reflects our Creator and satisfies our souls.
  • Essentialism. Greg McKeown describes the “discipled pursuit of less.” By saying no to the trivial many things in life in order to say yes to the essential few, one can maximize his or her influence to make lasting differences and increase all-around productivity.
  • Eat. Move. Sleep. Tom Wrath shares many simple things he has learned during his life-long battle with cancer. The small choices he makes everyday have lengthened the quantity and enriched the quality of his years. Little things over and over make huge differences.

"Leadership matters. Your leadership matters. A good leader changes the course of organizations, entire industries, states, countries, and even the global landscape.” -Burnett
